Before we set off for Kilimanjaro, we took some time to visit our sponsor child, Mutuku. He lives with his mom, dad and brothers in a small town called Machakos, 63 kilometres southeast of Nairobi.
We had sponsored Mutuku as part of our wedding so he was pretty special to us. We had a great time meeting him, touring his town, visiting his school and enjoying a meal in their home. A shout out to Compassion Canada - wow, they had documented all the birthday and Christmas money we had ever sent, and could show us exactly what it had provided for this family. It was pretty humbling to walk through Mutuku's house and see a mosquito net ("That was your Christmas gift from 2005"), one mattress for the whole family ("That was a birthday gift from 2006"), a few pots ("That was Christmas 2007"), etc. We have so much in Canada and we don't even know it! |
Below are photos of Mutuku's family, the well in their backyard, and their house.
Together we planted a tree to celebrate and called it "Baraka," which means "blessings" in Swahili.
We visited Mutuku's school, Mumbuni Primary School in Machakos. All classes came to a halt when we arrived!!!
What a very special visit this was. It's been special getting to know Mutuku through our letter writing, but this trip just made our connection so much stronger. Mutuku is an incredible, growing boy - and we were honoured to see inside his life, even just for a snapshot of time. We love you Mutuku. Keep shining!
